• One button to rule them all

Posted on 26th October 2013 by Andy.

Having remote controlled blinds is a great way to shut out the hectic outside world just with the flip of a switch. But with so many electronic devices in our lives that offer so many distractions and interruptions it can be almost impossible to completely disconnect. Emails and phone calls can still intrude while you try and relax or need to focus on a particular job. It's this very modern problem that a new Kickstarter project from CanFocus is trying to address. The MyFocus button is simply a single button that puts all your electronic distractions on hold instantly. Buying you time to yourself or to finish that big project. So all your emails, phone calls, text messages and instant messages are put on hold, only to be released when you press the button again. As an added bonus the button switches from a placid green to an angry red colour so that your co-workers and friends know not to disturb you. Plus there's an app for iPhone and Android to go with it.

Although it's still in its prototype phase the people behind the project are optimistic that they'll be able to go into production soon. Head over to their Kickstarter page to find out more.

  • Giving gardens a new spin

Posted on 1st October 2013 by Andy.

Giving gardens a new spin The empty courtyard below London’s Oxo Tower on the Southbank is getting a Summer makeover in the shape of The Remix Garden Project. It takes the Cloudy Bay Discovery Garden, which appeared at the Chelsea Flower Show, and lets four gardeners ‘remix’ it in their own distinctive style. Jon Sims kicks off the remixing with Anoushka Feiler, Matthew Childs’ and Daniel Lobb following on, with their respective designs being in place for three weeks each. The aim is to create a showcase for new gardening talent and inspire the public to keep coming back to use the space and become more involved in gardening and community gardening projects. The project runs until October and you can find out more here:

  • Grand Designs Water Tower Project

Posted on 7th February 2013 by jenny.

Controliss blinds were excited to be tasked with supplying and installing remote control blinds for Channel 4’s 100th Grand Designs episode, the fabulous Grade II listed Water Tower renovation in Kennington London.

Liaising closely with client Leigh Osborne and the project architects from the early stages of the project. Our brief was to integrate a number of wireless 240v mains powered electric blinds that could be effortlessly controlled as independent zones within the building or as whole groups of blinds.

Contemporary minimalism was the order of the day and the clean and sleek lines of our hand made pure white Roller blinds collection were the perfect companion to accompany the projects minimalist design theme. The Controliss fabric of choice in the various locations throughout the project was our Oscuro Frost white blackout Roller blind fabric.

One of the greatest challenges was to seamlessly integrate the remote control blinds over the colossal two storey minimal profile glazed sliding doors that spanned an entire elevation of the cube. The doors which were installed by Fusion Glazing Systems in Notholt, Middlesex are amongst the largest ever installed in Europe. Controliss were able to manufacture and install three Roller blinds at over 2 metres wide and 6 metres drop to ensure the blinds visually maintained the architectural integrity of the doors.

You can visit Channel 4's Scrapbook for Grand Designs to view some of the fantastic products involved with the project including bathrooms, kitchens, furniture and Controliss blinds.
