  • Remotely controlling light, shade, style and mood

Posted on 7th June 2017 by admin.

April and May have seen a typically English spring gearing up for, hopefully, a summer that will be warm and bright. Heavy showers, punctuated by spells of mediterranean-beating heat and sun have cast doleful shadows and bleaching, bright light in almost equal measures.

With such extremes, it can be hard to control the desired look and feel of any living space, no matter how creatively you have considered colour, finishes, flooring or lighting.

So, how can you ensure that you make the most of the available light when the weather is cloudy but still have the ability to control intense sunlight when the pressure rises and the sun makes an appearance?

Controliss battery powered and mains powered electric blinds allow instant control at the touch of a button, whatever the weather and however often it changes.

Whether you prefer the sumptuous, smooth or textured fabrics of Roman Blinds; the elegant sophistication of vertical blinds; the practical versatility of roller blinds; the contemporary minimalism of venetian blinds; or the natural or painted finishes of beautifully crafted wooden blinds, one touch wireless remote control is available across our extensive range and the inbuilt safety of cordless technology adds a reassuring piece of mind.

Rooms with multiple perspectives and windows are easily managed with simple remote controls that allow you to control single blinds, groups of blinds or timed automation.

Light is the biggest influencer of character for any given room and having control over its intensity allows you to define the personality of your living spaces.

Controliss battery powered and mains powered electric blinds are your perfect partner, allowing you to create the most comfortable environment for living or presenting the most inviting and welcoming home for entertaining.

  • Pantone Colour of The Year 2017

Posted on 18th January 2017 by admin.

Pantone Colour of The Year 2017

Each year, Patone®, the world-renowned authority on colour and provider of systems for colour communication across multiple industry and consumer channels, creates a ‘colour of the year’. For 2017, this colour is ‘Greenery’.

Setting aside the obvious appeal of a colour very similar to that of the Controliss® brand, we were struck by the reasoning for Pantone®’s choice: “A refreshing and revitalising shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings”.

With the new year celebrations only just passed, the long, dark nights and cold mornings inevitably lead us to think of spring and its promise of colour warmth. Though it’s likely to get colder before it gets consistently warmer, the new year does half one certainty: the changing seasons will shape our moods and the character of our homes. Rich, autumnal colours, whether inside on cushions, rugs, curtains, or outside in the garden and as part of the view, will soon seem at odds with a brighter mood and plans for time spent remodelling or redecorating the home.

But don’t forget the role light plays in those plans; without light, no colour can be seen and depending on the strength of that light, every colour undergoes change.

So if you’re brave enough to embrace Pantone®’s ‘Greenery’ as the refreshing, revitalising colour of the moment, how do you ensure it’s seen as intended? Controliss® battery powered and mains powered electric blinds are the perfect solution; whether it’s the delicate balance of light and shade or the elegant design and practical functionality.

Hands-free control of the intensity of light entering your favourite space, will ensure vibrant colours always retain a rich and entertaining influence over your decor; the mood you intended for your living, dining or sleeping space can always be maintained with just the touch of a button. Extra light for preparing that special meal, reading or entertaining can be programmed into remote controls and settings for subtle or complete shading can be saved for creating mood or privacy.

And when the next ‘colour of the year’ comes along, Controliss® battery powered and mains powered electric blinds will ensure your home is bang on trend, once more.

Of course colour is important but without control over light, it’s all too often a stab in the dark…

  • Let your blinds shine

Posted on 17th October 2013 by Chris.

    Metallic-blinds-Fabrics

The type of fabric that you choose for your blinds can make a real difference to the look of a room. When you go for shiny or metallic materials not only do they affect the way that natural and electric light can behave in your home, but they can also create a very dynamic colour palette. For instance, when your electric blinds open and close a lot of sumptuous, velvety fabrics will shine and shimmer chameleon-like as they fold or turn. So luxurious red Roman blinds might appear to have light red and pink tones or dark green blinds can shimmer with a flash of mint. In this way even the simplest of colour choices can appear more dynamic. Alternatively, you can go for subtler effects when you choose a roller blind. A wide range of the fabrics we stock also have metallic or shiny details. So even a light coloured blind can have some detail that catches the light and brightens a corner of a room. A lot of the fabrics available for our vertical and roller blinds also have a sheen or threads of metallic fabric running through them to create texture and dynamic qualities in the light. But it’s our range of venetian blinds that really catch the light. They come in a number of shades, including metallics, and also have a gleaming finish that really shines. This makes them ideal for modern, clean spaces and particularly kitchens and bathrooms. When you add that to our remote control options, which allow for small incremental adjustments and a variety of settings, not only are you controlling the light coming into the room but also how the light hits the blind itself. To make the most of these fabrics you should consider how the lighting in your room is positioned and how it reflects of the blind.

  • When to be bright and when to go dark

Posted on 13th August 2013 by Andy.

    Bright Electric Roller Blinds

If your home has large expanses of glass, that perhaps dominate most of one or two walls, adding remote control blinds gives you a great opportunity to change the whole look and feel of a room just with the touch of a button. But it’s not just a case of changing the amount of light coming into a room, or even blocking out the outdoor space to create a more intimate atmosphere. The colour and texture of the roller fabric can transform a space, complementing or contrasting with your other furnishings. They could make it a bright, energetic space or a dark, relaxing room. In a sense, you could think of your large roller blind as a kind of feature wall that you raise or lower to suit your mood. Photographers use white and metallic surfaces to reflect and complement their lighting when taking pictures. Inversely they use black surfaces to absorb light. If you’re using large expanses of a colour it’s worth knowing how it will affect the lighting, both natural and electric, in the room. Here are a few tips for choosing the shade and colour of your electric blinds. It’s worth noting that electric roller blinds provide more opportunities for unbroken expanses of colour with single spans of fabric. Be bright Bright, zesty colours work well in communal spaces where you want the atmosphere to be friendly and spacious. They can also give a room a sense of energy and can help put you in a good mood. When the weather isn’t so great outside or it’s getting dark a bright colour will keep things fun, friendly and lively. If you want to go bright, bathrooms and kitchens work well in vibrant colours, while a splash of colour in your home office will help keep your energy levels up. Go dark Dark, sober colours can give a room a real sense of sophistication. Contrasted with light coloured walls they can make a bold statement and transform a light airy space into a more intimate one. Effectively giving the same space two different ‘personalities’ to suit your mood. With this new sense of intimacy you can create a romantic or relaxed atmosphere, which makes it ideal for bedrooms. But like the photographer, you can use dark coloured powered blinds as a blackout for part of your home cinema set up in your living room. Not only will it block out the light but a dark shade will also subdue the lighting in the room, letting you focus on the big screen.

  • The World's most iconic lamps

Posted on 23rd July 2013 by Andy.

Lighting can transform a room. It can be used for dramatic effect or in very subtle ways creating a very different sense of space as to the one you may experience during daylight. Similarly, you may want lighting to be subtle or unassuming so you don’t know a light is there until it is switched on. Alternatively, some of the best lamps can also be great pieces of sculpture. Here are just a few classic and timeless lamps:

    Woka_AD9-Lamp

WOKA AD9 This Art Deco lamp designed for the Viennese lighting company WOKA by the likes of Josef Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstätte in 1925. The simple yet beautiful curved supporting arm is reminiscent of a desktop globe and creates a nice pool of light to work by. The company and the lamp are still going and one could be in your living room for just €2,050. http://www.woka.com/en/products/details/ad9/

    Flos-Arco-Floor-Lamp

Arco Silver Floor Light Designed by Achille Castiglioni in 1962 the Arco Silver Floor Light is a design classic. It makes a great centrepiece for a living room, its bold silouhette and gleaming metallic bowl dominating any space it occupies. It would fit well in a retro styled home and wouldn’t look out of place beside a bubble chair. It has been much copied and you can find reproductions, but a new one would probably set you back the best part of £1,700. http://www.heals.co.uk/lamps/flos-arco-silver-floor-light-by-achille-castiglioni/invt/611367

    Kartell Bourgie Lamp

Kartell Bourgie A modern classic of sorts, the Kartell Bourgie is Kartell’s biggest selling lamp, which is a twist on a baroque style. It comes in a range of colours and is surprisingly versatile, effortlessly fitting into a modern minimal space or a more classical décor. http://www.kartell.it/

    Anglepoise-Original-1227_Table-Lamp

Anglepoise The British company has been making lamps for 70 years and is currently celebrating the 75th anniversary of the design that started it all, the Anglepoise Original 1227. Designed by George Carwardine its innovative spring mechanism meant it is flexible and well balanced, making it a popular desk lamp. These days it is often copied and you can get one in virtually any size or colour. http://www.anglepoise.com/index.aspx

  • Light bulb moments

Posted on 1st June 2013 by Andy.

    Plumen-Designer-Light-Bulbs

A watershed moment for any designer is when they look at an object, which is so familiar it barely registers as you go about your daily life, and begin to ask questions. Why is it the shape that it is? Could it be made more affordable/ durable/ eco-friendly/ comfortable/ interesting? It may be something that is so widely used that we all accept it is the way it is because that is its most optimal form. Take the humble electric light bulb for example, for decades, despite progress in manufacturing techniques and materials, it has maintained the same shape. When energy saving light bulbs were invented they changed the form but the simple practicality of needing to fit into existing sockets and lamps meant it had to be a certain size.

The Plumen light bulb is a prime example of a designer, in this case Samuel Wilkinson working with Hulger, looking at an object and asking ‘Why is it like that? Does it need to look like that and could it be made better?’ Their elegant solution is literally an energy efficient electric light bulb with a twist, so that it also looks like a piece of sculpture. They’re so dramatically different from any other light bulb they invite attention. You actually want these light bulbs on display. When deciding how to furnish your home, remember the Plumen bulbs. Look for something familiar or mundane and present it in a strikingly different way so that it becomes the focal point of the entire room.

  • Chromotherapy - The Colour Of Thought

Posted on 14th July 2011 by Chris.

When sunlight hits water drops in the air at an angle that causes light to be reflected within those water drops, the light is separated into the different colours of the visible light spectrum, and the result we see is an enchanting display of these colours in the form of a rainbow. Colour is something we acknowledge from very early on in life and different colours can create varying interior mood effects, which is why the Controliss electric window blinds collection is available in an incredibly wide spectrum of varying colour shades so the perfect room ambience can be achieved. The terms that define the appearance of a colour are Saturation; Hue and Dichromatism; and Brightness, Tint and Shade. The Saturation of a colour refers to it's intensity. For example, adding extra layers of paint when covering walls will increase the paint colour's saturation. Hue is the similarity (or difference) a colour can be described as having to the 'rainbow colours', such as 'dark green', whereas Dichromatism relates to a change of hue shown as the result of a change in depth or thickness of a material. Brightness describes the Tint or Shade of a colour. Tint applies to the lightness of a colour, achieved by adding white to it, while Shade is acquired by adding black to a colour. When the Tint or Shade of a colour is altered, the Hue usually remains the same. For example, pink can be described as a Tinted red, but the adjustment from red to pink does not require a change in the Hue. Chromotherapy is the use of colour to stimulate the mind and can alter your mood and behaviour. Also referred to as colourology or colour therapy, the roots of chromotherapy have been found to lay in ancient Egyptian culture, whilst also having connections to other ancient civilisations. But, unlike some ancient ideology, scientific studies are able to prove that different colours do generate different emotional reactions in individuals, often for the better. Taking that into consideration, it is important that suitable colours are chosen in your home to take advantage of these 'healing properties'. However, a notable finding in the colour psychology studies is that the reactions were not always the same from person to person, so it is advised that anyone who will be spending considerable time in a room is involved in the choosing of the room's colour before it is applied (especially if the choice of colour is particularly exuberant). The world is full of glorious colour, and so should your home be. There are countless ways you can introduce colour therapy into your house, and there are even devices that will gently change colour to create a comforting mood. So, however your day has gone, you should be able to depend on your home to surround you with a soothing and relaxing ambience.

Bi fold doors have become an extremely popular choice for properties throughout the UK as an attractive way to invite space and light into the home and open up interior rooms to external garden patio and seating spaces. Electric blinds are proving to be an equally popular companion for bi-folds as an ideal way of controlling light and privacy over these expanses. External bi fold doors open and fold away to create a marvellous expanse between the inside living area and the outdoors, where you can walk straight out into the garden or onto a terrace or other outdoor seating area. The wide variety of doors are available in a range of finishes from uPVC, to aluminium and wood and can open a lot wider than traditional patio or French doors with up to a 95% clearance rather than the 40% offered with traditional patio doors.
