• Salvo Fair 2011 - Reclaim Reuse Repeat

Posted on 11th June 2011 by Andy.

Friday the 24th to Sunday the 26th of June, see the annual Salvo Fair. This year, Knebworth House is the host to this fantastic fair. Friday is trade day, then Saturday and Sunday are open to the public. The salvage trade has increased dramatically over the past few years, with people investing more effort in their existing homes rather than moving up the property ladder. Home owners have been giving their homes face-lifts, and have been savvy spending on antique and salvage goods, rather than brand new items. Your sure to find some individual home wares whilst giving environment a helping hand by recycling products. You will find some real weird and wonderful items at salvage fairs, and with a little bit of creative flair, you’ll be able to change them into wonderful pieces for the home. Some of the most interesting purchases have been nickel taps, railway sleepers, a stunning marble bath, stained glass windows, life rings and oak barrels. You’ll find a wide variety of exhibitors at the fair from salvage companies, selling everything for the garden and home, including reclaimed building materials, architectural salvage, garden antiques, decorative antiques, bygones, crafts people and green building. It can be a real weekend away for the whole family, another bonus is if you want a break from the hustle and bustle of the fair, you can visit Knebworth House itself. You can pretty much use old items to recreate new, for instance old watering cans can be planted with bedding flowers, railway sleepers can create raised beds in the garden or become a mantel pieces over an open fire. Even old ld meat hooks can, having been made safe for home utilisation, be reused in the kitchen to hang pots, pans and kitchen utensils on, and old glass and tiles can be broken up to create mosaic features in the garden or in the home. If you’re looking for some individual items with authentic character or just fancy spending a day browsing beautiful and interesting vintage pieces, visit the Salvo Fair on the 24th-26th at June, you can purchase your tickets here and get 10% discount when booking in advance for the Saturday and Sunday.

If you’re a home owner on a budget, which lets be honest, most of us are during the current economic climate, can be a bit of a drag when you want to re vamp the house. Unbeknown to a lot of people, for over a decade, Arthur Swallows has been putting on Antique and Home fairs in a bid to bring affordable antiques and second hand goods to the masses, and the fairs have transformed the way we shop for our homes. Over the period of a year, 6 Antique and Home shows are held across the country which thousands of specialised dealers from all over the world touting their wares from antique linens and furniture, brick-a-brack, fine jewellery and second hand goods. It’s literally a gold mine for those wanting to spruce up the home, and you could easily do up the house on a budget and get the things you really want. Arthur Swallows attracts buyers from all over the world, and is really a fantastic day out, sometimes even two days, as there is so much so see! I was lucky enough to be taken around the fair on a golf buggy and that took over an hour so you can imagine how big these events are! The fair really promotes restoration in offering salvage and recycled products. It allows people who don’t have the money to go out and buy a fully restored Victorian fireplace to find their own and restore it saving money, and creating a nice little project. Arthur Swallows has been featured in many magazines including BBC Homes and Antiques MagazinePeriod Living Magazine and on TV shows such as channel 4's “Kirstie’s Home Made Homes”. The next fair is the Lincolnshire Antiques and Home Show, on the 6th and 7th of June at the Lincolnshire Showground, take it from me, this is definitely worth a visit, especially if you’re looking for a special something whether it’s antique or a funky retro piece from the 70’s. For tickets and more information about the dates and venues of the fairs visit the Arthur Swallow Antique & Home Shows website at www.asfairs.com

Posted on 4th May 2011 by Andy.

All hail the great British craft fair. The great events which draw hundreds of people from miles around to marvel and artistic creations, learn about ancient skills and traditions, and taste as much free homemade cheese as they can. The craft fair is an institution in itself, and seems to attract a certain type of person. But if you’re looking for something that’s unique, that won’t be in hundreds of high street shops across the length and breadth of the country, the craft fair is the place to go. From handmade silver jewelery to finely crafted oak furniture that you would never find anywhere else. You can really boast about these pieces, because they’ve been made with TLC and really make a statement in the home. May 2011 heralds Craft and Design Month, where hundreds of events are detailed on the website to help raise the profile of British crafts. Supporting our own designers and crafts people is a great achievement, there is so much variety and excitement in crafts. Bringing back age old crafts like sculptured willow weaving: for great furniture and trellises in the garden, not only beautiful designs to look at, but practical and functional too. Also creating pieces from the newest technology such as digital craft which can be completely personalised like photographs made into giant pieces of art, great for the family home or a thoughtful personal gift. So if you’re thinking of something to do at the weekend, or fancy spending on a piece of art and craft that will really make that particular room at home or special person feel amazing, take time out to visit the events across the UK for the British Craft and Design Month. Visit http://www.craftanddesignmonth.net to find events in your area, oh and don’t forget to try the chilli cheese, it’s very nice.
