  • Creating an Inspiration Haven

Posted on 14th November 2011 by Andy.

The possibility of moving house is so exciting, and creating a home to bring up children or run your business from is a fantastic project. I must admit I can get a bit carried away with design ideas and what I would like in a home. Not only homes but offices could reap the benefits of having a creative room or an area where people can sit, think, plan and create.

I would love to be able to design an inspirational room, which would inspire me, allow me to work at my maximum potential and meet with colleagues, so they can work at the same level of creativity. With this in mind, I have started to plan my own brain storming haven.

Firstly, the space needs to be well lit, I think natural colours are always good for a base, then you can include bright objects and pieces of art to catch the eye, make you think, let you daydream and ultimately get those creative cogs turning.

Something I have wanted for ages is a black board, it sounds a bit old fashioned but I can then write up all the projects that need working on and cross them off when complete. One better than this, as a friend mentioned to me last week, is blackboard paint you can use on the walls, then you can write on them and rub it off! It sounds like a brilliant idea, it’s like creating your own artwork repeatedly.

Comfort is up most, you need a good area at which to sit and work, that does not strain your neck or cause any long-term problems, and so ergonomic furniture is perfect.

I love to listen to music when I’m working, just in the background, then I feel that I can switch off and tune in at will when working on a project. Plus, when a brilliant song comes on, it really gets your thoughts going.

In an office, something interactive is always great to allow people to be creative and engage in a process, so giant games of jenga or Sudoku are a great way to give people a 5 minute break but feel like they’re doing something creative.

If you need a room that will act as a stimulus for those creative urges, there is a huge range of inspiring wall prints, original furniture designs, and the devices you need that could  help you keep your mind focused. For example, by installing Controliss remote control blinds in place to control the light in the room; without leaving your desk you can open your blinds to brighten the room or close them to a level that makes the light less glaring and create a mood that fuels your imagination.

  • Warming Up For Winter

Posted on 25th October 2011 by Jules.

As our very late summer sun sinks away and the cold blustery weather forces its way upon us, all thoughts of flip-flops and cocktails subside, and are replaced by hotpots and Horlicks instead!

We are currently involved in the conversion of an early 1900's barn , a beautiful brick built building that the developers are trying to coax in to the 21st century.  Creating a contemporary scheme within a traditional facade, retaining the character and integrity of the barn throughout.

Having managed to achieve UV values in excess of those specified by Building Control, by utilizing specialist glazing and over specifying the insulation, the clients are keen to achieve a stylish, open-plan environment yet still feel nice and warm!

In large, open-plan expansive spaces, underfloor heating is the perfect choice.  Underfloor heating ensures a clutter free streamlined look, no restrictions in terms of  furniture placement and most importantly in the current climate, the wet system is extremely cost effective to run.  UFH eliminates the hot spots that are created by radiators, the heat generated, whether a wet (warm water) system or an electric system, is more uniformly spread, evenly throughout the floor.

Robbens Underfloor Heating is the system to be installed in the barn to all floors.  The ground floor and the bathrooms will all be finished in stone; the bedrooms are engineered wooden floors.  The system operates effectively with both flooring finishes, although it is worth seeking advice from your flooring supplier, if you wish to use beneath solid wood flooring.

The UFH pipes are laid on top of the insulation in the floor, and then covered with a product called Gyvlon screed.  This is a liquid screed that is pumped in, and cuts down on the heavy labour, and time entailed if completed conventionally.

Here is a photograph of the ground floor, prepared ready for screeding, which takes place tomorrow!

Having gone to so much effort to ensure that the Barn is toasty all year round, we will be introducing our sophisticated Controliss 240v blinds to the full height glazing.

At Controliss, we have a fabulous range of stylish, contemporary fabrics and as a member of the Controliss Design Team, I know that we have all of the Solar and Optical ratings of each and every fabric.

From the funky metallic effect screen fabrics to the light and heat defensive blackout fabrics, we can be certain of retaining the heat generated without compromising the design aesthetics.

  • Has Anyone Seen The Keys?

Posted on 4th August 2011 by Andy.

When it comes to home security, Controliss automatically operated electric blinds can offer significant peace of mind. When controlled with a Controliss programmable remote control handset, your window blinds will operate automatically at a specified times of the day, giving the impression that you are at home, even if you are miles away. Of course, the typical way we cast our home security fears aside is by locking our doors and security system. Developers are continually trying to establish a better system than the everyday, often hard to find, house key.

Say hello to your new front door key! It’s not a key as you would normally remember, that’s because Yale have invented the Keyfree locking system.
It’s very similar to the system we now use to unlock our cars, which is remote control.
It’s incredibly easy to use and is great for peace of mind, especially when you’ve just got back from the weekly food shop and it’s raining. Trying to find your keys in the bottom of the bag, whilst holding a load of shopping bags that are ready to burst, and getting wet, isn’t everyone’s idea of fun.

With the Yale Keyfree, you can sit in the car, unlock the front door from your seat and, hey presto, you’re straight in with minimum fuss. The key will even talk to you if you want it to. So no more rummaging for keys in your bag, no more key cutting for spares, it is one simple system, which is battery powered. Even if the batteries fail, it still works with its backup emergency power. If you head upstairs and forget to lock the front door, not a problem, one press and you’re safe and secure.

The Key Free Locking system comes as part of the handle and locking mechanism inside a multipoint locking door.

You have a keypad on the inside, which also works as an alarm, so you can enter a code to lock and unlock, and the alarm sounds if anyone tries to tamper with the door. The remote key fob can lock and unlock from 10 meters away, and there is a slot for a normal key, which will override the system.

So you have your remote control key for your car, your TV remote, your Controliss blinds remote and now you can lock and unlock your front and back doors with the Yale Keyfree Remote!

  • Boosting Bathroom Bliss

Posted on 24th July 2011 by Chris.

The bathroom is quite obviously of great importance, and constant use, in our everyday lives. Bathroom configurations are primary influenced by functionality, privacy and convenience. Remote control blinds will make an excellent addition to any bathroom, bringing convenient one-touch operation that gives extra privacy with minimal effort. Not only that, Controliss blinds would not look out of place next to many of the ideas that designers have made available or are proposing for our bathrooms.

Motivated by the aspiration of turning a normal bathing session into a more enhanced experience, there are diverse technologically endowed shower or bath options currently on the market.

One of which is Kohler's VibrAcoustic Bathtub which aims to invigorate and sooth, using the science of sound therapy, by synchronising preset music and sound vibrations with choreographed chromatherapy.

One more idea for an improved bathing experience is Linea Aqua’s Apollo steam shower which is suitable for showering, can act as a steam sauna and can even give a hydro-massage. Including a built-in seat with back rest, the shower temperature can be controlled using a computerised LCD keypad or by remote control, while the mood lighting adds more relaxation.

With clean water becoming an increasingly valued commodity, future bathroom technology shows consideration of practical ways to reuse waste water, since the transportation and treatment of our 'tap water' requires large amount energy and therefore has a serious impact on the environment.

Designer Jang wooseok has a concept for a bathroom system that drains the water from the sink into a tank that will supply water for flushing the toilet. The first half of the water used to flush the toilet will be taken from the sink water tank, while clean water is dispensed from the sink tap and for the second half of a flush.

There are many other bathroom appliances in development, if not already currently available, designed for the betterment of your bathing experiences while also helping to protect the environment. Just keep in mind that next time your bathroom is due for a refit, you could shape it into one that you can joyfully unwind in and still be using your water responsibly.

  • Chromotherapy - The Colour Of Thought

Posted on 14th July 2011 by Chris.

When sunlight hits water drops in the air at an angle that causes light to be reflected within those water drops, the light is separated into the different colours of the visible light spectrum, and the result we see is an enchanting display of these colours in the form of a rainbow.

Colour is something we acknowledge from very early on in life and different colours can create varying interior mood effects, which is why the Controliss electric window blinds collection is available in an incredibly wide spectrum of varying colour shades so the perfect room ambience can be achieved.

The terms that define the appearance of a colour are Saturation; Hue and Dichromatism; and Brightness, Tint and Shade.

The Saturation of a colour refers to it's intensity. For example, adding extra layers of paint when covering walls will increase the paint colour's saturation.

Hue is the similarity (or difference) a colour can be described as having to the 'rainbow colours', such as 'dark green', whereas Dichromatism relates to a change of hue shown as the result of a change in depth or thickness of a material.

Brightness describes the Tint or Shade of a colour. Tint applies to the lightness of a colour, achieved by adding white to it, while Shade is acquired by adding black to a colour. When the Tint or Shade of a colour is altered, the Hue usually remains the same. For example, pink can be described as a Tinted red, but the adjustment from red to pink does not require a change in the Hue.

Chromotherapy is the use of colour to stimulate the mind and can alter your mood and behaviour. Also referred to as colourology or colour therapy, the roots of chromotherapy have been found to lay in ancient Egyptian culture, whilst also having connections to other ancient civilisations. But, unlike some ancient ideology, scientific studies are able to prove that different colours do generate different emotional reactions in individuals, often for the better.

Taking that into consideration, it is important that suitable colours are chosen in your home to take advantage of these 'healing properties'. However, a notable finding in the colour psychology studies is that the reactions were not always the same from person to person, so it is advised that anyone who will be spending considerable time in a room is involved in the choosing of the room's colour before it is applied (especially if the choice of colour is particularly exuberant).

The world is full of glorious colour, and so should your home be. There are countless ways you can introduce colour therapy into your house, and there are even devices that will gently change colour to create a comforting mood. So, however your day has gone, you should be able to depend on your home to surround you with a soothing and relaxing ambience.

  • Classroom Control

Posted on 21st June 2011 by Chris.

The Controliss collection of beautifully designed motorised window blinds with the sophistication and elegance of one-touch remote control of window coverings are a real hit with home owners throughout the UK. Although, it is not just home owners who can benefit from the smart aesthetics and practicality of our window blinds.

Educational facilities also find remote control Roller blinds to be an extremely worthwhile proposition. While fitting neatly into any classroom, the blinds could serve multiple purposes in assisting the teachers with their efforts to educate pupils.

A common purpose for window coverings in the home, especially properties that are close to public roads for example, is to give privacy by obstructing the view into the window. Privacy may too be one of the reasons to put blinds up in a classroom, but the barrier produced can also prevent the people inside from watching what is going on outside. This is particularly helpful in schools with younger pupils, since it is a regular occurrence that teachers struggle to maintain their pupils' attention while there is something outside that attracts interest.

The other principal aim when window blinds are installed, is to gain control over the sunlight present in the room. This is where the Controliss electric window blinds bestow the top-level of convenience to it's users within a school, college or other learning environment. Projectors are a common tool used by teachers to present slide-shows, educational videos and other media to their pupils; but are much less effective when sunlight is making the projections difficult to see. The Blackout Roller Blind fabrics are available in varying colours, to comply with the décor of a room or even a lecture theatre, whilst also darkening it to give a clear view of the projection on display or any other demonstration that requires a dimmed room. And to return the natural light to the room, all blinds can be lifted again with the single push of a button.

Since Controliss Roller Blinds are all remote controlled, they eliminate the need to access any draw cords or control chains to block or permit the sunlight, meaning they are ideal for parts of a building with high-level windows. The added benefit of having no draw cords is that extra safety is given to younger children who could potentially injure themselves from getting tangled in such cords. Our cordless roller blinds do not need to be confined to classrooms and lecture rooms; the stylishness and functionality of remote control blinds make them a welcome addition other areas of the facility, such as the labs, halls, canteens and kitchens. The end of the school year is fast approaching, and the school holidays may be the opportune time to get the rooms spruced up with a new set of Controliss electric shades.

  • Zen Your Space With Natural Wood Blinds

Posted on 18th June 2011 by Andy.

If your house is anything like mine, with random artefacts left around, people’s clothes on the back of chairs and so on, it looks like a clutter, and unbeknown to you could be creating bad energy in the home. You might, however, be fully aware of bad energy it has already created in you, such as when your children haven't taken their stuff up to their rooms.

Never fear, the power of Zen is here. The word 'Zen' originates from a word meaning "meditation" or "meditative state". A lot of us have such busy lives that we need to be able to return home to a place of calm and relaxation. Turning your home into a place of serene surroundings, suitable for your routine of meditating or unwinding, does not necessitate a major overhaul. If you have Controliss Remote Control Blinds on your windows, you can create a barricade between you and any outside distractions with one effortless push of a button.

Let's start on the settings by reverting back to the basics, choose neutral colours, off whites, and natural muted versions of greens. Next, if you’re choosing furniture, choose pieces with low lines, made in natural materials. This means no fancy legs or frilling, just clean, modern lines. Try to choose furniture made from natural materials every time, and avoid man made plastic and steel, our collection of natural wood blinds are perfect here.

Lighting does not need to be brash and harsh, but soft and calming. If you have places in a room with recesses in the walls or pieces of furniture which could be lit from underneath, take that step to create a relaxing ambiance. If your lighting is still in the obvious places, change the bulbs to a softer tone or choose a natural lampshade of rice paper.

Allow as much natural light as possible into the home, it lifts your mood immediately. If you’re thinking about accessories, candles and plants are perfect, providing light along with that connection with nature. Choose bamboo shoots which grow quickly and are incredibly green and curly, these can create an interesting focal point.

If you’re thinking about flooring, again choose natural materials such as stone or wood. After all, Zen is all about creating that calm and relaxed space in your home, connecting with nature, going back to basics and un-cluttering your life. Therefore, no matter how stressful your day is, when you come home, it’s a calm sanctuary. You can promote Zen anywhere, even at your office so I'm now off to add a few Zen touches to my office at Controliss Blinds...

  • Human-Computer Interaction: Not Such A Long Shot For Watson

Posted on 17th June 2011 by Chris.

Whenever we receive a phone call or email, here at Controliss blinds, we are happy to provide answers to any questions you have about our our range of remote control electric window blinds. Many businesses receiving a large volume of calls now use interactive voice recognition (IVR) technology in order to help improve the service provided to their customers. However, the process of following instructions of pushing keypad buttons and speaking to the system, only to be directed to a meagre voice recording or to be put on hold until a real person is able to take the call, rarely feels effortless or satisfying on the customer's part.

Imagine talking to a machine that shows a human-like understanding of what you are saying and responds with an answer that suggests a level of knowledge and reasoning, as opposed to responding with the same answer for different questions. American technology and consulting giants, IBM, have developed an artificial intelligence computer system that is capable of responding to questions posed to it in more natural human terms, much more effectively than other IVR systems.

IBM's question answering computing system, named Watson, produces it's answers by running over one hundred simultaneous algorithms which filter through the two hundred million pages of structured and unstructured content it has access to, in just seconds.

In order to test the capabilities of Watson, it's developers arranged to have it compete on the quiz show, Jeopardy!, against the show's two greatest players. The main objective in Jeopardy!, is to respond to clues given in the form of answers, with the questions that will fit those answers. The test was a success as Watson defeated both contenders and won the first prize $1 million dollars, which IBM divided and donated to two charities.

Watson shows great potential in the future of areas that could really utilise it's abilities, such as the practise of medicine, where it may be used as a clinical decision support system to assist health professionals with the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Although, given the fact that Watson is made up of a cluster of ninety IBM Power 750 servers along with other hardware, it is unlikely that businesses will be appointing it to answer their customer phone calls any time soon.
